ALLEN,, Joseph "Perk"

CRAWFORDSVILLE - Joseph P. "Perk" Allen, 85, Wesley manor Health Center, Frankfort, a retired DePauw professor and the father of astronaut Dr. Joseph P. Allen IV, died at 4 a.m. Sunday, November 13, in Frankfort, after a lengthy illness. Mr. Allen retired from DePauw University where he was a professor of accounting, in 1975. He worked at Allen Bookstore from 1934 to 1942, did volunteer ordnance during World War II, and worked in accounting at R.R. Donnelley & Son in Crawfordsville from 1942 to 1947. A certified public accountant, he opened a tax office in Crawfordsville in 1950, taught accounting part time at DePauw from 1957 until 1958, then became a full-time professor, He was named Teacher of the Year several times. Born December 5, 1909, in Greencastle, he graduated from DePauw in 1930 and completed his master's degree at Harvard University. He married Harriet E. Taylor on December 24, 1933. Mr. Allen was a member of the United Methodist Church, Crawfordsville Masonic Lodge 50, Rotary, Scottish Rite of Indianapolis and a member and past national treasurer of Beta Theta Phi. Surviving are his wife, and two sons, Dr. Joseph P. Allen IV of Washington, D.C., and Dr. David T. Allen of Louisville, Ky.  – thanks KH
