The Vandalia will give a special low price to Boston on account of the GAR Encampment.

County Treasurer Walls is feeling better.  The taxes, which until last week had been very slow in coming in, are now flowing in a steady stream over the counter of the treasurer's office.  Not only Saturday, but Monday and Tuesday also has seen a constant line of tax payers entering and leaving the courthouse.  The large sum received by the treasurer is the tax paid by the Vandalia Railroad.  Nearly $10,000 was handed in to the office by that company, and the Monon swelled the fund by contributing $7,000 more.  The IOW and Big Four have not yet paid, being a little slow in parting with their cash.

Tommy Phillips tells us that it may be from three to five years before the Vandalia will go ahead wit the work of straightening the line between Harmony and Greencastle on account of the prospect of money stringency.  Although the Van people have the money set aside to buy the right of way, they are not in any hurry about doing so, as in many cases land owners got too greedy and wanted about six times as much as their property was worth.  Mr. Phillips says that if the railroad does buy any right of way at this time they will do so with the privilege of leasing it to the present owner until such time as the work of straitening the line may be begun.  It seems to us that some of the farmers along the line may overreach themselves and it may be possible that land will be worth a great deal less in a few years than it is now.
