Captain Stanley, the high diver, who
jumped from a tower on the courthouse corner during the Crawfordsville Corn
Carnival met with a mishap on Saturday afternoon at the Roachdale Street Fair.
He had been jumping there during the week and on Saturday got ready to make his
final leap. He got a bad start, however, and instead of striking the water went
smashing against the side of the tank. Several ribs were crushed in and he
received severe internal injuries. At first it was thought he had been killed
outright and great excitement prevailed. The doctors think that he has a chance
to live but he will never dive again. On Sunday he was started for his home in
Georgia on a stretcher. His finish was to be expected and was what naturally
comes to all such reckless dare-devils!
