SUTHERLIN, Thomas P. O. Morton, Farmer, Sec 34; born Sept 19, 1836 in this township; son of Riffe and Rebecca Sayler Sutherlin. Was married July 26, 1855 in this township to Nancy Henkel, born in this county Feb 26, 1835, daughter of Lott and Rosanna Henkel, natives of Roanoke Co VA; children were born to them as follows: William M Jan 1, 1858; Richardson C, July 10, 1862; Hansford W, June 10, 1864 and a boy who died in infancy. For 8 years after his marriage, Mr. Sutherlin worked in a saw mill; at the end of that time, he saved $1,000 which he invested in 100 acres of land with the addition of 86 acres he yet lives. His financial maxim has always been, Pay as you go. " Politically, he is a Democrat and he and his wife belong to the Universalist Church. Riffe Sutherlin came with his parents, Fendil and Lydia Sutherlin, to Orange Co Ind when but 7 years old; 7 years after, they moved to Parke County Ind residing there 7 years also; then settled permanently in this county where he married and has since resided; has had 10 children 8 living. Mrs. Sutherlin's parents settled in this county in 1827 her father died Jan 12, 1869; her mother is living in Franklin Twp, at the advanced age of 79. William M. Sutherlin is a teacher in School No 8 where he received his education. His father, the subject of this sketch believes in the thorough and general education of the young, and is one of the prominent men of the township.
