STOCKWELL, Lucius A. PO Cloverdale; son of Alanson A. and Mary M. Chamberlain Stockwell was born Brattelboro VT March 21,1849 and settled with his parents in this township 1869. Married July 21, 1875 Phoebe A. HORN of Cloverdale; has two children: Nellie & GR. Mr. Stockwell began teaching when 18 taught 9 years; was elected Co. Shool Sup in 1875 and reelected 1877. he don't use intoxicating drinks of any kind; don't use tobacco in any form; don't use profane language; don't go in debt' don't go security; don't buy things not needed because they are cheap; tries to learn something every day; takes good newspapers and magazines and always finds time to read them and last, but not least, always pays the printer. His ancestors on both his father's and mother's sides were "English folk," the former landed in Mass 1630 and settled in Charlestown; the latter (Chamberlains) came over a few years later, and settled in Salem, Mass; they took a prominent part in the early settlement of the country. John Chamberlan was a great Indian fighter and earned the intense hatred of the savages (see Bancroft's History of the US for exploits and hairbreadth escapes).
