Editor Banner: At the approaching primary election we have to choose between two of our citizens for the office of City Clerk.  Thomas M. Stevenson one of the candidates has been identified with Greencastle all his life and is in every way well qualified to discharge the duties of the office.  At the beginning of the war he entered the service as a private and served until the close, faithfully discharging every duty.  At the battle of Nashville, while leading a section of his battery to the front, he was wounded but remained at his post.  To such young men the offices and places of honor have been repeatedly promised the people of Greencastle.  Were those promises made in good faith or did the people intend to violate them?  Mr. Stevenson was the nominee two years ago and defeated by the gentleman who opposes him  now by running as the candidate of the Democratic managers of the city.  Mr. Stevenson has always been a working Republican, inside of the organization and is entitled to the hearty support of every Republican.  Shall a faithful soldier and good citizen well qualified for the small office to which he aspires, be rejected and a gentleman so lately the candidate of the Democracy be chosen instead?  Citizen.  - transcribed by kbz
