STEPHENS, Horace Greeley, P. O. Ashby's Mills, Physician and Manufacturer of Drain-tiles, Section 9; was born Sept 8, 1851 in this county and is the son of James Stephens (born in Hardin Co KY) and Deborah McCammon (born in Indiana) who settled in this county in 1830; his grandfather was one of the pioneers of the county, coming here in 1831, when it was but a wilderness; he, Thomas Stephens, died short after, but his wife, Rebecca Torr Stephens, lived till 1863; their son, James the father of Horace G, here grew to manhood, teaching school both before and after marriage and died Dec 6, 1863, his wief's death occuring in 1857; they had six children: Frances E. (wife of Thomas B. Claypole); William A. (deceased); Rebecca A.; Horace G.; Mary C. (deceased) and James T. Mr. Stephen's brother, William died August 17, 1864 of a disease contracted while in the army, which he entered March 16, 1864, enlisted in an Indiana Regiment. His brother-in-law, Thomas B. Claypole, served in the army 15 months, enlisting in the 54th Ind Reg in 1862. His sister, Rebecca A. Stephsns follows the profession of a teacher. Mr. Stephens, as a physician, is a member of the Ecclectic School; also manufactures on his farm tiles for drainage.
