SQUIRES, Henry - Putnam

Several years ago I sent my Putnam County genealogy info in book form to the library in Greencastle.  They also copied lots of data I had with me when I was there researching.

This is the information on my great-grandfather's brother Charles Henry Squires (he went by Henry his entire life) who was born 10 July 1841 in Connersville, Fayette Co., IN.  By 1848 the family had moved to Putnam Co., IN.    When the Civil War was over, after returning to Indiana, Henry lived in Madison Twp, Putnam Co., IN.  He is listed in the 1850 and 1860 census there.  In 1870 he had moved to Nebraska where he married and then moved on to Kansas where he died.  Somewhere along the line Henry and his brother (my great-grandfather David Morlin Squires)  dropped the last "s" off their name.  The story is that it had something to do with the Civil War and who the family sided with.  Henry and David's brother Oliver H. S. Squires is listed on the memorial monument in Greencastle.  Their parents were Isaac Squires and Mary Ann Cary.

Henry Squires Recruit F 70th Mustered in 1/24/1864; transferred to

33rd Regiment 6/8/1865.

From the History of Republic County, Kansas, 1901 - pg. 317

Henry Squire enlisted 7 August, 1861 at Indianapolis and was enrolled as a private in Company A, 27th Regiment, Indiana Infantry.  He served two years in the Army of the Potomac, taking part in the battles of Winchester, Cedar Mountain, Anteitam, where he was severely wounded, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg.  He was then transferred to the Army of the Cumberland and was in the battles of Resaca, Dallas and Peach Tree Creek, being wounded at the last named place.  The last engagement in which he took part was at Bentonville, North Carolina.  He was mustered out and honorably discharged at Indianapolis, 3 August 1865.

Wounded at Antietam--left breast & lung. 2nd Div United States Army General Hospital St Paul's Church Alexandria Virginia. United States Army General Hospital 16th & Filbert Sts Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Returned to regiment 2-25-63. Wounded at Chancellorsville. POW at Chancellorsville, paroled City Point Virginia 5-14-63, Camp Parole Annapolis Maryland 5-16-63, Washington DC 5-20-63, Convalescent Camp Alexandria Virginia 5-20 to 7-24-63. Returned to regiment. Severely wounded at Peach Tree Creek--gunshot right hand, lost index finger. 1st Div/20th Corps General Field Hospital Vinings Station Georgia. Hospital Marietta Georgia. United States Army General Field Hospital Chattanooga Tennessee. Veteran transferred to 70th Indiana Infantry and later consolidated with 33rd Indiana Infantry. Mustered Out 7-21-65. Died Courtland Kansas 5-5-1920
