SPENCER, Charles. P. O. Portland Mills, Farmer, Sec 32; born March 22, 1853 in this township son of Jesse Spencer born in SC June 23, 1817 and Sarah Jane Clodfelter Spencer born in NC March 20, 1821. Married Oct 12, 1875 in Parke Co IN Mary J. Ramsey born May 31, 1852 daughter of Andrew and Susannah Ramsey, natives of KY has one child, Jesse Morton born June 21, 1877. Mr. Spencer is the oldest of two children, his sister, Sarah Jane born Aug 6, 1855 died in this county June 10, 1863; his father came to this county when 13 with his parents, John and Elizabeth Spencer; they died hereand are buried in the graveyard north of Portland Mills in Parke County; Jesse Spencer started life on $40 and at the time of his death Sept 19 1877, owned 635 acres of land. He married March 21, 1852 Sarah Jane McGahey (McGaughey?) widow of James McGahey, and daughter of John and Catherine Clodfelter; she died in this county Jan 3, 1859. Married May 21, 1860 Julia A. Clinkenbeard (maiden name Yates); she is still living on part of the old farm of which Charles owns 495 acres. He and wife are Presbyterians; politically, is a Republican.
