Hiram Shuey, the subject of this sketch, was born in Pickaway county, Ohio, January 21, 1816. In 1839 I was united in marriage to Miss Anna Berry of near Lancaster, Ohio, I moved west in 1839 and settled in Cole county, Ill. There my wife and three children died in 1840. In 1841 I began teaching school in the Blakesburg district, Putnam Co., Ind. In 1842 I taught in the Hawcreek district near Ladoga, Montgomery county, Ind. In the same year I was united in marriage to Miss Sophia Dean, who, lived only five months. In 1844 I was married to Miss Clarisa Mits of Montgomery county. The fathers were among the Methodist pioneers of that day. My third wife died in 1862 and left me with five children to mourn her death. Three of them are still living. In 1863 I was again united in marriage to Miss Emma Logan of Montgomery county, Ind. With whom I enjoyed a life of trials and happenings for about 45 years, then she died and left me with six children to mourn her loss, all of whom are still living, while I in my 95 years am traveling by myself to pass away a lonely life. Now I am at Sedan, with daughters. In the above named places I received the name of the Hawcreek teacher. I taught in Montgomery, Boon and Hendricks and Putnam counties for ten or twelve years and have many warm friends whom I would love to greet once more, if not on earth, may we live to meet in the better land, where I expect to soon rest from my trails here. In 1856 I moved to Missouri, settled in Davis county, there sold out and moved to Sullivan county, hear Lindly; from there to Mercer county in 1866 where I have lived since the most of my time. I am now on my return home from my visit or travels since October last. I saw three of my children, many grand and great-grand children and many old friends. This is written by myself - Hiram Shuey.
