SHINN, Joel H. PO Fillmore, Farmer, Sec 28; was born in this township and county march 20, 1839; his father came to this county with his parents, Joel and Nancy Shinn; the former born July 2, 1784; latter April 2, 1791; they moved to Missouri where they both died. Samuel Shinn married in this county Dec 10, 1835, Mary Ann, daughter of Henry and Elizabeth WALN, and had a family of 9 children, Joel H. being the second; he died in this county Jan 29, 1855; his wife living till March 15, 1864. Joel H, the subject of this sketch married in this township Sarah E, daughter of Thomas & Nancy M. JOB; the former born in Wayne Co IN March 15, 1812; latter in Tenn Nov 3, 1815. Mrs. Shinn was born in this township March 27, 1840; since her marriage with Mr. Shinn, she has had the following children: Rosella M, born June 29, 1860; Ellery L, born NOv 7, 1863; died Nov 15, 1863; Alma born Jan 19, 1865; Emerson E, born June 8, 1867 died Aug 29, 1871; ELmer L, born Jan 29, 1870 and Stelle Olive born Feb 17, 1877. Mr. Shinn has been a very successful farmer, owning at present 160 acres of fine land, a view of which will be found in this atlas. He began life a poor man and has received no outward assistance, so that his success is attributable solely to his own efforts and those of his industrious, thrifty wife. Both belong to the Baptist Church of which Mr. Shinn is a Deacon. Politically, he is a Democrat. Has been Justice of the Peace for four years, and he and family are among the most respected residents of the township.
