ROBINSON, Josias H., M. D. PO Fillmore; was born in Washington County VA July 28, 1825 and was the son of James Robinson who was born in VA in 1799, and Lavinia HOPKINS Robinson, a native of the same state. His parents moved to this county in 1831 when he was but six; they had born to them 11 children: James (deceased); Abijah; Josias H; Anderson M; Cassandra; Clotilda (deceased); Julianna; Evaline (deceased); Jane; Lawson (deceased) and James Robinson. His father was a school teacher by occupation and many good citizens of this county received all the education they ever acquired from him. He followed teaching until his death in April 1847. The Dr. was not "born with a silver spoon in his mouth," he went to school until he was 10 from that to 14, he went to school in winter and worked at farming in summer; he then hired as a farm hand working at $5 per month, which he followed until his 23rd year; the last six years at the nursery business, the first 3 with Ruben Ragan of Marion Twp, Putnam Co IN and the last 3 with Aston Aldridge of Indianapolis; all of his spare time he worked at medicine under the guidance and instruction f Dr. William Mathews of Floyd Township, PUtnam Co IN who generously loaned him the books with which to prosecute his studies. He was married Oct 29,1850 in Floyd Township to Ruhanan daughter of Martin and Mary Cartright Wright; she was born in Liberty, Union Co IN May 8, 1830; they have had 122 children: Amanda E (deceased); Ann Elisa; Cahterine; Robert D (deceased); FLorence (deceased); Malinda A (deceased); Rosa Belle (deceased); Nelson H; Albert P; Lee O and two died in infancy. In 1851 and 52 he attended the Indiana Central Medical College which was the medical department of Asbury; in the fall of 1852 he began practice in Effingham County, Illinois, where he remained six years being instrumental in the laying out of th town of Mason in that county which is now a thriving village; in 1858 he moved to his early home, exchanging property and practice with Dr William Mathews and has ever since been a resident practicing physician of Floyd Township; residing on Sec 27 where he carried on farming in connection with is profession; in 1875, he attended the Indiana Medical College of Indianapolis where he graduated this school is now the medical department of the State University. In 1858, he was nominated on the Democratic ticket as joing Rep of Effingham and Fayette Counties, Ill which he declined; he also received a nomination for Representative from the Republicans of Putnam County which he did not accept. Politically, he has always been a Jeffersonian Democrat and on the breaking out of the rebellion became a firm supporter of the Government; during the way, he was commissioned several times by Gov Morton to visit the army to aid in the medical department. He was made a Mason in 1853 in Effingham, Ill and has filled every office in the Lodge with the exception of Master. Religiously, he believes in a common origin and destiny for the human family - "The fatherland of God and Brotherhood of Man," generally known as Universalism. It is a common acknoledgment that the Doctor has one of the deepest and most logical minds in Putnam County and today stands in the front rank of its physicians; he is genial and courteous and his door is ever open to friend and stranger alike, being hospitable and generous to a fault.
