JAMES W. RISK, P. O. Carpentersville, Farmer and Stockraiser,Section 27; son of Elswick Risk and Mary Kitchen, natives of Kentucky, wherethey were born in May, 1800, and who settled here in 1828; was born in thistownship April 2, 1829. Was married Oct. 23, 1856, to Eliza, daughter of Samuel and Polly Brown, natives of Tennessee; by this marriage had four children - three died in infancy, Mary died 1876, in her eighteenth year. Was again married in 1863, to Mary A., daughter of V. and Margaret Anderson-Catherwood (natives of Kentucky), who was born in this county October 3, 1846; has had seven children - Armilda (deceased), John Henry, Elizabeth, Leonard, Joseph, Jane, and one not yet named. Mr. Risk is the third in a family of six children, four now living; his parents came to this county poor entered eighty acres of land in Monroe Township, which the family yet own; they were both members of the M. E. Church,and his father remained an honored member till his demise, July 16, 1875; his mother is yet living, and resides with him; she is one of the few human "landmarks" who saw the growth of this county, and who, with her husband, helped to make it what it is. Mr. J. W. Risk owns 392 acres of well improved land, made so mostly by his own steady perseverance and economy, having often worked by the month at $10, and split rails for 25 cents per hundred; he is a saving, industrious man, and stands among the self-made men of Putnam County. Is a Republican in politics, and firm in upholding his principles. Is a member of the Masonic fraternity.
