Retired Physician, Father of Attorney, Dies Here - Funeral Wednesday.
Dr. Silas T. Richman, died at 11:30 o'clock last night at his home, 1640 Lafayette avenue, after a week's serious illness. He was the father of Frank N. Richman, local attorney, and in early life was a teacher in Columbus high school.
Funeral services will be held at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning at the Hege and Flanigan funeral home conducted by Dr. Alexander O. Sharp. Burial will be made in City cemetery. The pallbearers will be three nephews, Brevoort Baker of this city, Walter R. Stewart of Hope, and Hal C. Richman of Indianapolis; a grandson, Philip C. Richman of Indianapolis; D. M. Bottorff and Paul W. VanArsdall.
The casket will be open at the funeral home this evening and tomorrow morning.
Although Dr. Richman had lived here less than a year this time, he was a native of this section and a resident of Columbus in his young manhood. He was born May 25, 1852, in a log cabin about three miles east of Hartsville in Decatur county, and was the youngest of ten children of Enoch and Adeline Gillet Richman. He attended Hartsville college, then taught in country schools to earn his way through old Asbury college, now DePauw, from which he was graduated with an A. B. degree in 1877. At the time of. his death he was, among the oldest graduates of the college.
He was principal of the Jamestown schools for a year, and while there met and married Elma J. Baker, a sister of Charles S. Baker, local attorney, Oct. 8, 1878. After this he taught a couple of years in Columbus, high school, then studied medicine in Indiana medical college in Indianapolis, graduating in 1883. He practiced here for a year; then went to Princeton, Kan. where he practiced untll,1892. He then went to Chicago and engaged in a general practice on the South side until the fall of 1927, when he retired. While there he took his M. D. from Northwester University Medical school. He moved to Indianapolis in 1928, and came here last April.
For years Dr, Richman was supreme physician of the United Order of the Foresters, later merged into the Brotherhood of American Yeomen. He was a member of the Masonic lodge in Chicago, and Sigma Chi college fraternity.
Surviving besides his wife and son is a daughter, Miss Alice M. Richman, at home.
