Jacob Pickle

Jacob Pickle was born in 1793 in Virginia. From Washington County VA, he enlisted in the War of 1812. He served from Sept. 14 1813 to March 1814 where he was a Private under Captain James Shelton's Company of Virginia Militia, 5th Regiment. He participated in several skirmishes near Norfolk before being honerably discharged.

He migrated to Indiana, and settled in Putnam County in the early 1830's. This is where he married his wife, Nancy Bundurant, January 17 1833. Nancy was the daughter of Joe Bundurant/Bundran and Mary Landis.

Jacob was a farmer, and because of his service in the War of 1812, he received a land bounty from the government for 160 acres. The land was located in Fincastle, near Ramp Creek. This is where he raised his family, 6 sons, and 4 daughters. Joseph, Gabriel, Jacob, Henry, Oliver,Jonas, Julia, Rachel, Mary and Nancy. His sons helped with the farming, until Joseph and Gabriel enlisted in the Civil War.
Jacob's wife Nancy died in 1862 at the age of 47. Two of his children died in 1863, Rachel, age 29 and Henry, age 26. All are buried at Pickle Cemetery in Fincastle, IN.

Julia, born 1833 married William Hulse, and later Josiah Dyer. Her children were Jacob Hulse, Luther Dyer, Lafayette Dyer, Mary Dyer and Henry Dyer. She had two children with Mr. Hulse that died young and are buried at Pickle Cemetery. Julia cared for her father, Jacob in the later years of his life. Julia died in 1899 and is buried at Pickle Cemetery also.

Joseph Pickle married Mahala Obenchain, and later moved to Montgomery County, where he remained a farmer and raised 8 children. One child died young, Landa Pickle, and is buried at Blakesburg Cemetery. Joseph lived to be 80 years old, dying in 1920.
His remaining children were Wilmer, Otis, Jacob, Rachel, Flossie, Ida and Andrew.

Gabriel Pickle married Miranda Burgess and moved to Blue Earth MN. They had 14 children. Years later, the couple and some of their children moved to Long Beach,CA. Gabriel died in 1924 and his body was taken back to Blue Earth which is where he was buried. Many of Gabriel's descendents are still living in Blue Earth MN and also in California.

Jonas Pickle married Sarah and lived in the area most of his life. He was a farmer. He is buried at Ladoga Cemetery, dying in 1914.

Nancy Pickle married John Todd and lived in Putnam County, raising a family of 6 children. Vinnie, Laura, Lonzo, Della. Elsie and Elliott.

Mary Pickle married John Stultz and lived most of her life in Fincastle. The Stultz's had 12 children. And also helped raise two granddaughters. Mary died in 1929 and is buried at Hartman Cemetery in Fincastle.

Oliver Pickle, born in 1855 married Ida Bridges and had 4 children. He was a farmer, and at one time, owned land near his father. He died in 1938 and is buried at Roachdale Cemetery.

Jacob Pickle eventually sold off some of his land and spent his remaining years in Fincastle, suffering with health problems and blindness. He died April 21, 1884 and is buried at Pickle Cemetery. In later years, a momument was erected next to his tombstone for his contribution to the War of 1812.
