PICKEL, Alexander H., P. O. Carpentersville, Lumber Merchant; came to this county when a young man; started in the lumber business in 1869 and is still engaged in it; he was born in Davidson Co NC Oct 10, 1830. His father, George H. Pickel, and mother, Susannah Hanes were both born in the same county, the former in 1800, latter June 1812. Mr. Pickel was married Sept 5, 1854 in NC to Mary c. Knouse, by whom he had 5 children: George W; Marcus A; Susan M; Alfred H (dead); Mary J (dead). Mrs. Pickel was the daughter of George J. and Mary Knouse and was born in NC Aug 31, 1836; she died in Putnam Co Nov 14, 1870. Mr. Pickel was again married June 14, 1871 to Sophie J, daughter of Richard and Mary McFerrin was born in Montgomery County, Ind Oct 30, 1843; he has had by this union two children: John A. and Lina May. Mr. Pickel is the odest in a family of six children, but 3 of whom are now living. In 1862 he enlisted in the 54th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Co B serving 15 months; was in the battles of Champion Hills and Arkansas Post; again enlisted in the 11th Indiana in 1865 serving with it five months, when he was mustered out at Baltimore. He has been Justice of the Peace six years in his township, still holding that position. Politically, he is Republican and is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church; belongs also the Carpentersville Lodge No 115, IOOF [Independent Order of Odd Fellows] also to the encampment, holding the position of District Deputy Grand Master. Mr. Pickel enjoys the confidence of his fellow townsmen.
