Hon. Thomas M. Patterson, of Denver, Colorado, the Democratic nominee for Governor of the Centennial State is a native of the County of Carlow, Ireland and was born on the 4th day of November in the year 1840. Young Patterson came to the US in early life and received a common school education in Indiana, followed by a year’s study at Asbury University, Putnam County, Indiana and a like period at Wabash College at Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Indiana. Up to the year 1864 he was a printer and silver-smith. Subsequently he began the study of law was admitted to the Bar and commenced the practice of his profession at Denver, Colorado where he has ever since resided. Mr. Patterson entered the political arena in 1874, when he was appointed Attorney for the city of Denver. While Colorado was a territory he was elected delegate to the 44th Congress as a Democrat, receiving 9,633 votes against 7,470 for Hon. H. Bromwell, his Republican opponent. He was reelected as a Representative to the 45th Congress when the state was admitted into the Union but the certificate was given to James R. Belford. Mr. Patterson contested his right to the seat and upon a thorough and fair investigation, it was awarded by the House to the contestant, Dec 13, 1877. Mr. Thomas M. Patterson has ever been a strenuous advocate of Democratic principles but is regarded with great respect by both the Republican and Democratic parties for his statesmanship and ready skill and power in debate. It is largely to men of the mold of Mr. Patterson that the youngest State in the sisterhood of the Union has become so well known throughout the world. As a political leader or as a lawyer, Mr. Patterson is considered equal to any occasion that may arise involving the welfare of his state and his ability for public life has received flattering recognition from his fellow-citizens of the Centennial State – kbz
