OWEN, John T

Source: Greencastle Banner & Times 27 April 1894 p 3

John T. Owen, old reliable, needs no introduction to Greencastle people and he has a wide acquaintance with the country people.  As an aspirant for coroner, Mr. Owen adds weight and strength to the county ticket.  He was born on a farm in Greene County, Ind where he spent his early days, going to school in the winter and working on the farm in the summer.  While in his teens, he served an apprenticeship as a carpenter.  He was 21 years old on Nov 1, 1860 and on the  7th day of that month voted his first ballot for that patriot, Abraham Lincoln.  Mr. Owen says that he has voted for every president since with the excep0tion of Grover. In July 1862 his patriotism caused hi to enter the service of his country and he helped to raise a company of men and went with them into the 71st regiment, Indiana volunteers, serving as 1st Lt. for two years and two months.  Mr. Owen was mustered out of service on Sept 15, 1864 on account of wounds received in the numerous severe battles in which his company was engaged. In 1874 he moved to Greencastle and has since that time been a citizen of Putnam and this city.  Mr. Owens has been an aspirant for nominations in his party and has met defeat with the same staunch faith in republicanism that he would have displayed had he been successful.  He is a kind-hearted, genial gentleman and will poll a strong vote everywhere and is fully competent to act as undertaker at the democratic funeral.
