McCARTY, John. P. O. Mount Meridian, Farmer, Sec 1; born Jan 25, 1822 Clairborne Co Tenn son of Thomas & Phoebe McCarty who settled in this county in the fall of 1826; he was married to Martha Peck June 30, 1840; their children were born as follows: Mary Jane April 8, 1843; Sarah E Sept 22, 1847; Amanda E July 20, 1851; Isaac T, Aug 21, 1853; William T. As Mr. McCarty's early life was spent in this county when it was but sparsely settled, he share din all the discomforts and hardships which usually accompany pioneer life; starting in life with ubt little capital, he has by industry and judicious management accumulated considerable property, owning at present a half section of land. His home being on the old National road, he has every opporunity of entertaining "angels unawares," notwithstanding the many demands made upon his hospitality, he dispenses it with open hand to rich and poor alike, seconded by a wife no less benevolent than himself. He and wife are members of the ME Church and are always found in their places there, except when detained by sickness; they take a warm interest in all church matters, their religion being practical as well as theoretical; their daughters are all married; two living in this county and one in Kansas; their oldest son, Isaac T is now attending the Law Dept. of Ann Arbor University, the other William is teaching school at Westland; the family are highly respected by all who know them.
