Tuscola, Ill April 9 – Next to Uncle Bennie Pursel, William Martin, one of our early settlers, probably ranks next in point of great age. Mr. Martin was born in Bourbon County, Kentucky Jan 13, 1806 and he is therefore 81 years of age.  His father came to that county in 1805 from Virginia where the family lived until 1826 when they moved to Putnam County, Indiana. Our subject, after a long residence in that state came to Piatt County Illinois in 1861 and soon after found his way to this city. His father lived to the age of 76 and his mother to the age of 86.  Mr. Martin is still full of life, and does not look as old as many men of younger years. He has been a recognized leader of the Methodist Episcopal Church for almost half a century, and is held in high esteem by a large circle of friends and acquaintances. Dr. WH Martin of the Board of Health of this city is his son. - kbz
