LEACHMAN, Francis M. - Putnam

Francis M. LEACHMAN, a resident of Marion Township, was born in this county June 10, 1836, son of Willoughby and Elizabeth Leachman, the former a native of Virginia and latter of Kentucky. Willoughby Leachman removed with his family from KY to Putnam County IN about 1830, and settle dupon the farm now owned by William Purcell in Marion Township. He lived there a short time, then removed to a farm one-half mile orth of Fillmore, it being the farm now owned by BF Wysong, where he reared his family and resided many years. He subsequently removed to Fillmore, where he died Oct 2, 1867, his wife surviving until June 26, 1885. They were the parents of 4 children: Geoge who lives in Douglas Co IL; James, a resident of Mason Co Ky; Mary E, wife of WC Hopwood at Greencastle and Francis M. The father wa sin his 70th year when he died. Like all pioneers he endured many trials and har dships, and was widely and favorably known as an honest, enterprising citizen. Perhaps no other man has done more toward developing hte resources of Marion Twp than did Mr. Leachman. He was a liberal contributor toward any enterprise that would benefit the community. F. M. Leachman was reared in this county and received a common school education. He was married March 7, 1858 to Miss Mary J. Bridges born Feb 11, 1838, in this county and a daughter of Judge Moses T. Bridges of this cunty. To this union have been born 4 children: Lizzie K, wife of James H. Newman who travels for Murphy, HIbben & Company, Indianapolis and they ahve one child born to them, a son, Fred; Albert, Clarence and Ernest. Mr. Leachman owns 160 acres of well cultivated and well improved land, and is conceded to be one of the best farmers in Marion Township. Mrs. Leachman is a member of the Christian Church and both are greatly respected by all who know them. Politically Mr. Leachman affiliates with t he Democratic party.
