Greencastle July 4 - The Fourth was celebrated here today by the ladies of the city. For several years the men have been letting the day go by default, until many of the children of the city had a dream of a celebration. One week ago the women decided to celebrate, and today's successful affair was due solely to their efforts. A parade 8 blocks long, headed by the City Bnd, marched to the DePauw west campus, where a peaker's stand had been erected. In the parade were 300 Sunday school children; the GAR and militia, citizens and old settlers in carraiges, the fire department, city officers, lodges and others. At the campus stand were 3,000 people who listened to addresses by Mrs. Jeanette Preston Layne and Mrs. BA Mansfield.

On last Monday morning in Putnam Circuit Court on motion of John P. Allee, Esq the first woman was admitted to the Putnam County bar, in the person of Mrs. Jeannette Preston Layne. In support of the motion Mr. Allee made a short speech setting forth the ability and fitness of the candidate he had proposed. The oath was administered to Mrs. Layne and she is now in with other legal lights, working for her clients’ interests.
