John and Catherine Elizabeth (Schrider) Kunkel
Research by Marilyn Bridge Brown

John Kunkel (b. ca. 1823-4) and Catherine Elizabeth Schrider (Schreiner, Schriver) (b. ca. 1829-30) both were from Tyrone Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. They were married in a house in Adams County on 8 Mar 1849 and remarried in a church on 21 Mar 1849.

Five of their seven children were born in Adams County, near Gettysburg. Their son Jacob Adam told of hearing shots of the Battle of Gettysburg while plowing on the family farm. At some point during the War, their horses were stolen, but they were never certain if it was by Union or Confederate soldiers. Following the Civil War, probably in 1866, John and Elizabeth migrated to Fountain County, Indiana, and settled on a farm in Shawnee Township near Attica, where their last two children were apparently born.

John and Elizabeth are listed in the 1870 Fountain County census for Shawnee Township, but they apparently died before the 1880 census records were taken. There is no record of their deaths in Fountain County death records or in Fountain County cemetery records. They may have been buried in unmarked graves on their own land. There children were:

William Francis Kunkle (b. 12 Dec 1849-50; d. 18 Apr 1909)
Jacob Adam Kunkel (b. 19 Sept 1851; d. 4 Feb 1930)
Sarah Kunkel (b. ca. 1854; d. ca. 1928)
Ruth Anna Kunkel (b. 1863; d. 1936)
Mary E. Kunkel (b. 11 Jan 1864; d. 10 Jan 1960)
Amanda Jane Kunkel (b. ca. 1868-9; d. 25 Feb 1893)
Martha Kunkel (b. 1872; d. 1952)
