The Family of Jacob and Ann Knauer
and their Descendants

Jacob Knauer and his wife, Ann, left Chester Co. PA about 1839. Putnam County land records indicate that Jacob purchased 80 acres from the United States government on 10 Nov 1840.

With Jacob and Ann were their five children: Martha, Elizabeth, Benjamin Franklin, Clement Brooks, and Israel.

Martha, Clement, and Israel left descendants, some of whom are living in Putnam County today.
Elizabeth married late in life and had no children. Benjamin Franklin never married and a guardian was appointed for him at the time of Jacob's death.

Martha Knauer was born 20 Nov 1820 in Chester Co., PA and married George Washington Cricks (d. 25 May 1868 in Putnam Co., IN, 47 years, 11 months, and 25 days of age), 29 May 1845 in Putnam Co., IN. Martha is believed to have died 24 Aug 1896 but her burial place has not been located.
George and Martha Cricks had two children, Ann Cricks and Benjamin F. Cricks. They began housekeeping in Clinton Township of Putnam Co. with George adding to his landholdings at each opportunity.

Ann Cricks, born 21 Mar 1847, Putnam Co., IN married George Briscoe, (27 Feb 1832-07 Apr 1915), the son of John Brisco(e) and Sarah Quinan, natives of Kentucky. The marriage took place in Putnam County on 25 Oct 1877.
Ann died 19 Aug 1890 in Putnam Co. and both Ann and George are buried at Little Walnut Cemetery.

Benjamin Franklin Cricks, born 10 Sep 1848, Putnam Co., IN married Barbara Ann Miller, 17 Nov 1870, Putnam Co., IN [Note: Barbara Ann Miller was the daughter of Edward Reynolds Miller and Mariah Toney. Barbara was the sister of Emley Evaline Miller who married Clements Brooks Knauer.]

Clement Brooks Knauer Sr., was born 05 Feb 1833 in Chester Co., PA. He married on 31 May 1860 in Putnam County to Emley Evaline Miller, daughter of Edward Reynolds Miller and Mariah Toney. Emley was the sister of Barbara Ann Miller who married Benjamin Franklin Cricks (above). Clement Brooks died 18 Mar 1903 in Putnam County and was buried at Little Walnut Cemetery. Emley died 12 Jun 1929 in Hendricks County, Indiana and was also buried at Little Walnut Cemetery.

Christopher Edward Knauer was born 13 Feb 1863, Parke Co., IN. He married Clara Elizabeth Ford, a native of Kansas, 01 Aug 1889, Nemaha Co., KS. "Chris" died 18 Feb 1945 in Putnam County and Clara died about a year later on 04 Feb 1946, also in Putnam County. Both are buried at Little Walnut Cemetery.

Jonathon Washington Knauer, born 11 Aug 1864, Parke Co., IN, married Lauretta Alice Wiley 07 Aug 1889 in Putnam Co. Lauretta was the daughter of William Wiley and Susan Jane Frank. Jonathon died in Putnam Co. on 02 Dec 1941. Lauretta died 21 Oct 1950, Putnam County, and is buried at Little Walnut Cemetery along side Jonathon.

Noah Oscar Knauer was born 16 Nov 1866 in Parke Co. and died in 1869 in Putnam Co. He is believed to have been buried in a Cemetery known as Mollar Woods.

Martha Ann Knauer, born 11 Jun 1868, Putnam Co., married Lewis Alexander Ford 18 Nov 1893, Putnam Co. Lewis was the son of Jonathon Gillis Ford and Marinda Hicks. [Lewis was the uncle of Clara Elizabeth Ford listed above.] This couple moved to Nemeha Co., KS and lived out their lives there. Lewis died 04 Mar 1928 and is buried at the Ford Cemetery in Nemaha Co., KS. Martha Ann survived him until 1965. She is also buried at the Ford Cemetery.

Joseph Andrew Knauer was born 28 Nov 1869, Putnam Co., and married Sedona A. Wiley, daughter of William Wiley and Susan Jane Frank [sister of Lauretta Alice Wiley above]. They married in Putnam County on 20 Aug 1889. Joseph died 16 Jan 1950 and Sedona died 08 May 1952, both in Putnam County. Both are interred at Little Walnut Cemetery.

Clement Brooks Knauer Jr. , born 04 Sep 1871, Putnam Co., married twice. 1) Etta Woodward, daughter of Chesley Woodward and Mary Etta Booth, 05 Feb 1896, in Orange Co., CA. 2) Ina O. Coombes, the daughter of James H. Coombes and Dovie B. Payne, 05 Nov 1921 in Clay Co., IN.

Mary Florence Knauer was born 30 Jun 1873, Putnam Co., and died 28 May 1887 also in Putnam Co. She is buried at Little Walnut Cemetery.

Jacob Tilden Knauer, born 29 Jun 1876, Putnam Co., married Rosa May Hasty, the daughter of Perry Hasty and Frances Harris, 10 Nov 1901, Putnam Co. Jacob died 24 May 1914, Putnam Co. and Rosa died 04 Feb 1974. Burial occurred at Forest Hill Cemetery in Greencastle.

George Earl Knauer, born 11 Sep 1877, Putnam Co., married Nellie Bernice Hillis, 14 Sep 1904, Putnam Co. Nellie was the daughter of Abraham Hillis and Lou Emma Hall. Nellie died 31 Dec 1963, followed by George on 03 Jul 1966, both in Putnam Co. Burial was at Brick Chapel Cemetery.

Minnie Bell Knauer was born 14 Sep 1879 in Putnam Co. She married Charles William Layman, 18 Sep 1904, Putnam Co. Charles was the son of James Henry Layman and Laura Anne Jordan. Charles died in Marion Co., IN on 28 Jan 1937 and Minnie Bell died 21 Apr 1964, also in Marion Co. Burial was at Forest Hill Cemetery in Greencastle.

Osa Delia Knauer, born 08 Aug 1881, Putnam Co., married Garfield Mack Berry, 24 Dec 1900, Putnam Co. Garfield died 02 Feb 1938 in Putnam Co., as did Osa who died 09 Feb 1970. Burial was at Little Walnut Cemetery.

Israel Knauer was born 02 Apr 1837, Chester Co., PA. He married Elizabeth Hood, 23 Feb 1860, Parke Co., IN. Elizabeth was the daughter of Reevesby Hood and Rebecca Bryan. Israel died 14 Sep 1911 and Elizabeth died 14 Oct 1914, both in Putnam Co. Both are buried at Little Walnut Cemetery.

Rebecca Knauer was born in Putnam Co. on 31 Jan 1861. On 01 Dec 1881 she married John McHargue in Putnam Co. Rebecca died 20 Nov 1926 and is buried at Kingman Cemetery in Fountain Co., IN. John, the son of James Henderson McHargue died 12 Aug 1950 in Fountain Co. and is also buried at Kingman Cemetery.

Jacob Knauer was born 20 Mar 1862 and died 27 Aug 1863 in Putnam County.

Jane Ellen Knauer, Born 15 Jun 1863 in Putnam Co. Jane married William Frank Carmichael on 03 Dec 1885, also in Putnam Co. "Frank" was the son of Alfred Carmichael and Sarah Cassandra Thoroughman. He died 15 May 1932 in Parke Co. and was buried at Little Walnut Cemetery. Jane survived until 02 Nov 1941, dying in Putnam Co. and being buried at Little Walnut Cemetery.

John Hutson Knauer was born 13 Oct 1864 in Putnam Co. He married twice: 1) Elizabeth Newgent 07 May 1890, Putnam Co.; 2) Etta R. Berry, 12 Jun 1907, Parke Co. Elizabeth, the daughter of Edward Newgent and Martha Holland, died 20 Oct 1899 in Putnam Co. Etta was the daughter of William Berry and Elizabeth Whoman. John died 30 Aug 1917, Putnam Co. and burials occurred at Little Walnut Cemetery.

Sarah Elizabeth Knauer, Born 07 Jun 1866, Putnam Co., IN Sarah married Thomas Brothers on 26 Nov 1889 in Putnam Co. Sarah died 19 Aug 1942, Putnam Co. while Thomas died 02 Apr 1946. Burial was at Clinton Falls Cemetery.

Israel Knauer Jr., was born 26 Nov 1867, probably in Putnam Co. He married Orpha Jane Wysong, daughter of William Henry Wysong and Harriett Perkins in Putnam Co. on 12 Oct 1889. Orpha died 08 Nov 1912 in Putnam Co. and was buried at Union Chapel Cemetery. Israel died 31 Jan 1946 and is also buried at Union Chapel Cemetery.

David Knauer was born 05 Mar 1869, Putnam Co. and died 25 Sep 1870.

Frances Alice Knauer, Born 05 Oct 1870, probably Putnam Co., Frances married Joseph Edgar Perkins, the son of William Perkins and Nancy White. The marriage occurred 31 Mar 1897 in Putnam Co. Frances died 05 Jun 1946 in Putnam Co. while Joseph survived until 21 Jan 1959, dying in Putnam Co. Both are buried at Union Chapel Cemetery.

Jesse Knauer was born 11 Aug 1873, probably Putnam Co. He married Bertha Inez Phillips, daughter of James L. Phillips and Emily McGaughey. Both Bertha and Jesse died in Marion County, Bertha on 30 Nov 1947 and Jesse on 31 Mar 1949. Both are interred at Little Walnut Cemetery.

Daniel Knauer, Born 25 Feb 1872 in Putnam Co. Daniel married twice: 1) Laura N. Noble, daughter of James Noble and Margaret Hartman of Parke Co. Laura died 30 Mar 1905 in Parke Co. 2) Rosa May Hasty Knauer, the widow of Dan's cousin, Jacob Tilden Knauer. Daniel and Laura were married 26 Feb 1893 in Parke Co. while Dan and Rosa were married 24 Sep 1916, Putnam Co. Dan died 02 Jan 1923 in Putnam Co.

Noah Reeves Knauer was born 13 Apr 1875, Putnam Co. He married Minnie B. Thompson 08 Apr 1896 in Putnam Co. Minnie died 19 Feb 1935 while Noah died 21 Sep 1942 in Vermillion Co., IN. Both are buried at Little Walnut Cemetery.

Lillie W. Knauer, Born 05 Apr 1877, Putnam Co., Lillie married George Slavens, 15 Dec 1897 in Putnam Co. Lillie died 15 Oct 1900 in North Dakota territory. She was brought home and buried at Little Walnut Cemetery.

William Knauer was born 03 Jan 1879, Putnam Co. He married on 19 Mar 1905, also in Putnam Co. to Bessie Edith Ellis, the daughter of Ransom Ellis and Sarah Siddens. William died 27 Apr 1933, Parke Co. and was buried at Little Walnut Cemetery. Bessie died in 1963 and was laid to rest beside her husband at Little Walnut Cemetery.

Grace Viola Knauer, Born 19 Oct 1885 in Putnam Co. Grace married Levi Hasty, the son of Perry Hasty and Frances Harris and brother of Rosa May Hasty Knauer on 15 Nov 1908 in Putnam Co. Grace died 20 Sep 1963 in Putnam Co. and was buried at Forest Hill Cemetery. Levi survived until 01 Jul 1973, dying in Putnam Co. He was also buried at Forest Hill Cemetery.
