The subject of this sketch, Mr. Lemuel Johns who made such a clever race in the convention is a son of Stephen M. Johns, an old settler of Putnam County who moved to this section from Ohio in 1849 to the farm now occupied by Elisha Buis, 7 miles east of Greencastle. He was born in 1843 in Preble County, Ohio and consequently was but six years old when coming to Indiana. The major portion of Mr. John’s life has been spent in Putnam county, he following the quiet and honorable calling of the farmer. For four years Mr. Johns was in Kansas where he engaged in the lumber business, connected with the Kansas Lumber Company from which company he carries the highest letters of recommendation. The uncertainty of crops in the west was the cause of Mr. Johns’ return to Putnam where he has since remained.  Mr. Johns has been identified with the republican party ever since he has been a voter, having like many another truly good man, started right by voting for Abraham Lincoln in 1864.  Mr. Johns is capable and highly qualified for the position of county recorder and makes his initial request for an office of honor and trust with this effort. He is an active church worker and a man without  a blemish. He adds great strength to his ticket and should be elected by a handsome majority.
