J.M. Humphrey
-- Among those attorneys practicing at the bar of this county of whom popular
mention is made in these columns, the above gentleman is equally deserving of
mention. Mr. Humphrey by birth is a
Hoosier, having seen the light of day in Putnam County, Indiana in 1855. When he was but seven years of age, his
parents moved to Park (sic) County that state where they resided until 1869 and
in the fall of that year, immigrated to Kansas, locating in Crawford County.
Here Mr. Humphrey’s parents resided about two years and then moved to Bourbon
County. JM Humphrey received a common school education in Crawford and Bourbon
counties’ public schools and then attended the high school of Girard. After
leaving the high school he taught school for two or three years and then
attended the state university at Lawrence.
In 1878 he came to Fort Scott and the following year commenced the study
of law under Judge French. After being admitted to the practice, he formed a
law partnership with him Judge JS West and was associated with him until Judge
West was appointed Judge. He then formed
a partnership with B. Hudson, under the firm of Humphrey & Hudson which
firm still exists. Their office located in Union block is a large one and
contains a fine law library. He was county attorney of Bourbon County from
1888-1890. Mr. Humphrey is a member of a
number of lodges, among them being the Masonic and Modern Woodmen. He was
married in 1887 and has one child, a blue eyed girl five years old. - kbz
