HOPE, Charles F. - M.D.

Charles F. Hope, M.D.

Source: This book has no cover, and no index, and no author. I bought it on Ebay; it just has the insides, but it is full of Indiana biographies. I am not researching this family, just thought I would share. I do not know anymore about these families or these surnames. NOTE: I don’t know if there is any additional mention of this family in the book, it has no index. I do not want to sell this book. I am typing the biographies from it.

Charles F. Hope, physician and surgeon, has had a very successful professional career, covering more than thirty years, during which time he has become well known in several Indiana localities. Doctor Hope is now practicing at Ellettsville, Monroe County.

The Hope family came to Indiana about 1835. Doctor Hope is descended from a Scotch- Irish Presbyterian, whose first name was probably Thomas and who first appeared in history in the decisive battle of the Boyne on July 12, 1690, when James, during the Stuart period, was defeated by William, the Prince of Orange. This ancestor of Doctor Hope showed great coolness and bravery in this battle, his horse falling while under him, and he narrowly escaped with his life. He was twice married. Two of his sons, James and Robert, half-brothers, came to America and settled in Chester County, Pennsylvania. About 1760 both of them moved to Hartford County, Maryland. James Hope, the ancestor of Doctor Hope, by his first wife, Anne, or Nannie, had, four children: Adam, Thomas, Nancy and Richard, and the children of his second Wife, a Miss Clendenin, were John, William and Isaac. Some years after the establishment of the home in Hartford County, Maryland, James and some of his children and his half brother moved on to North Carolina.

Richard Hope, the third son and fourth child of James, was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, September 29, 1744. He married, June 6, 1769, Jane Wilson, daughter of Andrew Wilson, of Monaghan, York County, Pennsylvania. Their children were: Jenny, born September 27, 1770; James, born March 9, 1772; Agnes, born November 9, 1773; Rebekah, born November 16, 1775; Hannah, born March 29, 1778; Isaac, born November 24, 1780; Andrew, born June 27, 1782; Naomi, born February 6, 1787.

Of this family Isaac Hope was the grandfather of Doctor Hope. In early life he went to Baltimore, then to Cincinnati, and after-wards to Shelbyville, Kentucky, where he married Miss Susana Ellis. She was born August 1, 1792, daughter of Joseph and Franky W. Ellis. Her father was born January 12, 1768, and her mother December 23, 1774. From Kentucky Isaac Hope accompanied by his family, came to Indiana and settled in Putnam County, where he lived until his death on July 19, 1865. He had three children: Eliza, born May 6, 1824, and died October 21, 1856; Jesse, who became a teacher, was born July 4, 1831, and died November 30, 1859; and James Andrew. James Andrew Hope, father of Doctor Hope, was born October 22, 1834, and was still a small child when his parents moved to Putnam County, where he became a farmer and stock raiser. He married, August 11, 1864, Miss Elizabeth Newnam, daughter of William and Rachel (Gastineau) Newnam. Her parents also came from Kentucky. James A. Hope and Elizabeth Newnam were the parents of three children: Charles Franklin; Ollie, who was born February 11, 1871, and married John Quincy Leachman; and Daniel Kirkwood, born September 6, 1879.

Dr. Charles Franklin Hope was born in Putnam County, Indiana, September 13, 1867. He attended school at Sulphur Springs in that county, near Greencastle, graduating in 1884, and during all his early years helped his father on the farm. In September, 1884, he was enrolled in the preparatory department of the Indiana University at Bloomington, completed his high school and preparatory course in 1886, and the following two years were spent in Indiana University. He also taught school for five years in Putnam County, and while teaching studied law, but in 1892, having made a choice of medicine as his career, entered the medical department of Indiana University and was graduated at Indianapolis in 1896. Doctor Hope for over a quarter of a century practiced medicine at Coatesville in Hendricks County, and from 1922 was practice for seven years at Shoals in Martin County. In 1929 he removed to Ellettsville, and this community of Monroe County has given him a most encouraging practice. Doctor Hope has an interesting record of service during the World war. On April 10, 1917, a few days after this country declared war on Germany, he was commissioned a first lieutenant in the Medical Reserve Corps. He was promoted to Captain December 25, 1917 He was first assigned duty at Fort Benjamin Harrison and in November, 1917, was transferred to Camp Beauregard at Alexandria, Louisiana. For about five months he had charge of the field hospital at the Great War munitions center of Nitro, West Virginia. With the signing of the armistice he returned to Hendricks County and resumed his professional work.
