HIRT, J. Franklin

J. Franklin Hirt

Source: This book has no cover, and no index, and no author. I bought it on Ebay; it just has the insides, but it is full of Indiana biographies. I am not researching this family, just thought I would share. I do not know anymore about these families or these surnames. NOTE: I don’t know if there is any additional mention of this family in the book, it has no index. I do not want to sell this book. I am typing the biographies from it.

J. FRANKLIN HIRT, owner of the Hirt Electric Shop at Greencastle, has shown unusual ability in the field of business, particularly as a salesman. Mr. Hirt is a native of Tennessee, but both his father and grandfather lived for a time in Indiana. A very fine character and unusual businessman was his grandfather, Alfred Hirt. He was born in Switzerland, came to America when a small boy, and his energies raised him from a condition approximating poverty to wealth and influence. He engaged in the lumber business, and eventually became an extensive operator of sawmills in the southern states of Mississippi and Arkansas. As an American lumber manufacturer he sought an outlet for his products in Europe, and he made many trips to European countries in arranging for the sale of the output of his lumber mills. He specialized in the manufacture of cooperage supplies, including barrel staves, and he was the builder of the original Vienna cask, which was awarded a prize at the Paris Exposition. He lived to be eighty- five years of age, passing away May 2, 1928.

J. Franklin Hirt was born in Madison County, Tennessee, July 21, 1902. His father, J. Franklin Hirt, Sr., was for several years a grocery merchant in Indianapolis, Indiana. He married Avery Tucker, who was a great granddaughter of Gen. Anthony Wayne, whose brilliant military leadership put an end to the early Indian hostilities in the Northwest Territory. J. Franklin Hirt of Greencastle was the only child of his parents. He attended public schools in Putnam County and at the age of eighteen became a salesman for automobiles. For a time he sold the Chevrolet car, and he set some high marks in volumes of sales among the Indiana representatives of the Buick Automobile Company. From the automobile business he turned to the business of electrical contractor and dealer in electrical equipment and goods, and has made the Hirt Electric Shop one of the chief organizations of its kind in Putnam County.

Mr. Hirt married, July 24, 1924, Miss Thelma Elizabeth Koessler. Her father, Louis N. Koessler, was born in Germany. Mr. and Mrs. Hirt have three children: J. Franklin III, born in 1925; Robert Louis, born May 16, 1927; and Avery Wayne, born November 28, 1929. Mr. Hirt is a Presbyterian and a Mason, and both his father and grandfather were members of the Masonic Order
