I am daughter of Henry Elbert Hillis (son of Frederick & Clara HILLIS) and Dorothy Alice McATEE of Pike Co, IND

Hamilton's first wife died when Maria was born and the family story is how he rode by horseback carrying this tiny baby in his arms to her maternal grandmother to raise. Then when he remarried to Phoebe, she went to live with them and dearly loved her stepmoma. I gather from the stories that it was winter when he took her to Indiana from Illinois.
