HAZELETT, RICHARD M., P. O. Greencastle; was born in Monroe County, Ind., Oct. 2, 1819; he is the third in a family of nine children, only four of whom are now living, viz.: Nancy, wife of Oria MCCOLLUM, of Morgan County, Ind.; Matilda, Mrs. Granville GRAY, of same place; and America HAZELETT, now residing at Stilesville, Hendricks Co. Samuel HAZELETT was the son of William and Nellie BRISDON HAZELETT, and born in Bourbon County, KY., June 11 1790; his grandfather, Samuel, was a native of Scotland; his father, William, was born in Ireland, near Londonderry, and emigrated to the United States about 1785, settling in Pennsylvania, where he married, moving thence to Bourbon County, Ky.; in 1811, he came to what is now Brown County, Ind.; from there to Monroe County, and finally settled in Marion Township about 1825, where he resided till his death, October, 1832; Samuel HAZELETT was in his twenty-first year when he accompanied his parents to Indiana; he was married in Brown County to Nancy MILLER, born in Georgia, June 27, 1792, daughter of Mordecai and Isabel ADAIR-MILLER, natives of South Carolina, and of Scotch descent; in October, 1824, he settled in Marion Township, this county; he now resides at Stilesville, Hendricks County, at the ripe old age of eighty-eight years; his wife died in Morgan County, about 1864; he can look back to the time when the beautiful fields of "Old Putnam" were a wilderness, and wild game of all kinds was abundant, and say that he contributed his share of labor necessary to bring them to their present fertile condition. The subject of this sketch was in his fifth year when brought by his parents to this county; in Marion Township he grew to manhood, was married May 18, 1843 to Malvina BUNTEN, born in Mercer County, KY., September 28, 1824, daughter of Andrew and Sarah B. BUNTEN, natives of Mercer County, KY.; she bore him six children, viz.: William J., July 13, 1844; Mary M., March 9, 1847; Samuel A., October 20, 1849; Sarah A., April 26, 1852; Jennie, November 22, 1854; and Richard P., November 23, 1857, died May 3, 1862. Mrs. HAZELETT died in this county April 1, 1861. January 1, 1863, Mr. HAZELETT was again married, to Mary B. HUME, daughter of John NICHOLSON; she was born in Trimble County, KY., April 4, 1824; by this union was born John HAZELETT, July 12, 1865; he died in August of the same year.
