HAMRICK, Ambrose Dudley

Ambrose Dudley Hamrick

Born in Kentucky about 1808, Ambrose Hamrick was the son of Gilson and Sarah (Thomas) Hamrick. Gilson and Sarah had moved to Kentucky in 1796, but moved to Indiana where they lived for three years.

Gilson and Sarah had been married 9 Nov 1785 in Fauquier Co., VA so it would appear that Ambrose was a younger, if not the youngest child, in this family.

Ambrose married Eliza Simpson, the daughter of Solomon Simpson and Nancy Johnston, the daughter of Hugh Johnston, 16 Nov 1829 in Mason Co., KY. In Burns' Record of Marriages in Mason County Kentucky for the Period of years 1788 to 1851 Inclusive, on page 79 there appears the following entry:

Hambrick, Ambrose D. - Simpson, Eliza b(ondsman) Solomon 11-16-1829

According to the 1840 Indiana Census Index, Ambrose was living in Washington Township, Putnam County, Indiana and was enumerated on page 666. Since the Census returns gave no information other than the name of the head of household, we do not know the names of the children in his household.

The 1850 Indiana Census gives us more information and from this we know that Ambrose and Eliza had the following children in their household:

Soloman S., 19, KY (This differs from the 1860 census-see below)
Mary F., 17, KY

Lucinda,14, IN

Sarah,11, IN

Charles C., 5, IN

Walter S(cott), 1, IN

Ambrose's age was given as 42 and his birthplace as Kentucky. Eliza was 39, also born in Kentucky.

By 1860 Mary had disappeared from this household and I believe she had married in Putnam County, Indiana to Leroy H. Kennedy on 3 Jun 1858. The other children were still in the household and included Simpson,28, IN (this differs from the 1850 census information); Lucinda Hamrick, 21, IN; Sarah Hamrick, 17, IN; Charles Hamrick, 15, IN; and Walter Hamrick, 11, IN.
