FREEMAN, GEORGE H., was born in Dublin, Ireland, July 16, 1828, and is the son of William and Sarah (HEAPS) FREEMAN; natives of Dublin, Ireland; he resided with his parents until his 15th year, when he emigrated to the United States, landing in New York City, in July, 1842; he attended the Mercantile Library classes five years, receiving a good general education; in 1855, he came West and settled in Fillmore, where he has since resided; his parents came to Fillmore in 1856; his father was a minister of the Baptist Church, and, in 1870, joined a colony that emigrated to Arkansas, where he died shortly afterward, his mother is still living and residing with him. The subject of this sketch is by trade a wagon-maker, which he has followed since he came to Indiana. In August 28, 1861, he was married to Sarah LEACHMAN, daughter of Loyd and Elizabeth Knight; one child was born - Charles L. FREEMAN, September 11, 1864. Mrs. FREEMAN died October 10, 1872. He was again married February 15, 1874, to Mary Jane NICHOLSON, daughter of John and Margaret NICHOLSON, natives of Ohio, where Mrs. FREEMAN was born in April, 1830. He became an Odd Fellow in 1848, and a Mason January 11, 1876, and is now Secretary of Abrogate Lodge, No. 155, located in Fillmore; he was elected Justice of the Peace in 1874, and re-elected in 1878, which position
of trust and confidence he now occupies.
