Alexander James Farrow, P. O. Portland Mills, Farmer, Sec 29; was born in Orangeburg, Mason Co KY Jan 3, 1843. His father, William L. Farrow, was the son of Col. William Farrow, who emigrated from VA to KY, when it was almost a wilderness. His mother, Cassandra Phillips-Farrow, was the daughter of Gabriel Phillips, who came from MD to Ky in an early day. HIs parents had a family of 4 sons and 4 daughters, 3 being dead; one son is now living in Montana, and a daughter in each of the following place, Missouri, WIsconsin and FLorida. When he was but 4 his father died, leaving to his mother the task of rearing and educating her family; by attendance at the common school, he acquired the rudiments of the English language. IN 1856, his mother with her boy emigrated to Buchanan Co MO; thence to Brown Co KS; where she died within a year after her arrival. Then the subject of this sketch was thrown upon his own resources; he at once determined to acquire a liberal education, so took a collegiate course at Pleasant Ridge College, Platte County, MO; after finishing his course, he taught for some time in the city of St. Joseph and other places. But wishing to see more of Western life, he spent about two years in Neb and Col. returning to MO in 1864; after remaining a few months, he went to Hancock Co ky where he engaged in teaching till near the close of 1864 when he came to Putnam County; rsumed teaching and married 17 Sept 1865 Sarah C, daughter of William and Jane C. ramsay, settling in this township two miles east of Portland Mills. Has five children, born as follows: Jane Florence Theodora, June 28, 1866; William Homer, July 5, 1869; Juliett Laurette Dec 17, 1871; Vera Nettie May Jan 19, 1874; Howard Alexander Aug 21, 1876. Mr. Farr is an enthusiastic farmer.
