John DONALD, farmer and stock raiser, resides on Sec 29, where he owns 253 1/2 acres of good land, in a high state of cultivation. He was born in Ayrshire, Scotland Aug 10, 1836, a son of James and Margaret Smith Donald. The mother was born in Scotland of English ancestry. The parents never left their native country. They reared 7 children, 3 of whom are now living: William resides in Glasgow, and is foreman in decomposing chemical works; Robert also lives in Glasgow and is an iron puddler. Our subject was raered to the occupation of engineer, and was employed in the chemical works of a sulphuric acid manufactory. He was married in his native country in 1857 to Miss Elizabeth Colvin, daughter of William Colvin, who was born in Ireland and removed to Scotland with her parents when quite young. They had 10 children, their 3 eldest boys dying in infancy. Their surviving chi ldren are James of Clay County, this state; William resides at home; John married Miss Etta Harris of PUtnam County; Margaret; Mary; Jane and Lizzie. Mr. Donald followed his trade until he was about 25, then removed to America, landing at NY and coming direct to Warren Trumble co Ohio. They lived there one year where Mrs. Donald was engaged in farming then removed to Cleevland, Cayuhoga Co lived there 7 years, where he was engaged in the blast furnaces. He then came to Knightsville, Clay Co this state and livec until 1876 and then came to Putnam co and purchased his present farm, but followed his usual occupation bout 3 years. Since that time he has engaged inf arming and has been quite successful. Himself and wife are members of the Presbyterian Church. All they have has been earned by hard work and economy. In 1887 Mr. Donald and some friends visited his native country, remaining several months.
