The annual institute of the Johnson County Teachers’ association will be held in the auditorium of the Franklin High School Friday and Saturday. Two sessions will be held each day. The program is one of the best ever offered at institutes here. The teachers have engaged three instructors, Mabel Dunlap Curry and Louis J. Retiger of Indiana State Norman and Maynard Lee Daggy a prominent lecturer and educator. Both Prof. Retiger (Rettger?) and Mrs. Curry are well known here. They have spoken at former institutes.

The following “Who’s Who in America,” will tell something of Mr. Daggy:
“Daggy, Maynard Lee, educator; born at Greencastle, Ind Nov 27, 1874. Graduate of DePauw University. “Every indication of Big Success in Chautauqua” – The lecturer of the third day, Mr. Maynard Lee Daggy, is a cosmopolite. Business men receive his community development work with enthusiasm and “the common people hear him gladly.”  He comes like the breath of a whirlwind from the Puget Sound country where for over eight years he has been professor of oratory in Seattle at the University of Washington. He was one of the first publicists to demand a more popular and practical course in the public schools and he urged parcel post, postal savings, popular senatorial elections and other advance steps before they were generally understood and accepted.  Mr. Daggy is somewhat exceptional in that while of a practical mind he is a natural orator who finds joy in his work. The Smith-Spring Holmes Company appear before both lectures, afternoon and evening in two great concerts.

He was a pall bearer for Pearl Bryan – omg !!! (he & 5 other young men from their graduating class)
Source: Indiananpolis Journal – For second time in history of Indiana State Oratorical Association the honors have been won by a young man, Miss Nellie Wood, Earlham’s rep.  Maynard Daggy of DePauw, discussed the relation of the church to the social conditions. Hs manner made up in earnestness what it lacked in true oratorical qualifications. He deplored the estrangement between the church and people and said people have tired of minister who preach for money and cry out for such men as A bbott and Parkhurst who he said preached Christ’s teachings.
