BURNSIDE, William A., P.O. Portland Mills, Farmer, Sec 29; was born here March 17, 1839; son of James Burnside, born in Madison Co KY April 22, 1798 and Eliza Cunningham Burnside, born in SC July 13, 1803. Mr. Burnside's parents were married in this county Nov 15, 1831 and had 8 children: John born Nov 27, 1832; David born Sept 5, 1834; James H. born Feb 25, 1837; William A., above; Eliza Jane, born Jan 7, 1841; Samuel A., born Nov 15, 1843; Mary Ann born Feb 11, 1845 and Nancy, born Nov 15, 1847. James Burnside was the son of John and Mary BUrnside, he a native of PA she of KY; his mother was taken captive by the Indians at Riddle Station KY when but 7 years of age and held a prisoner till she was 14; was born oct 10, 1772 and died about 1830; his father's parents were natives of Ireland and came to PA shortly before their son's birth; he was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and was born in 1748; died in this county Feb 17, 1838. In 1826, James Burnside entered 80 acres of land on which he still lives; his wife, Eliza died March 3, 1870; she belonged to the UP (sic UB?) Church of which he is a consistent member. His sons, John, David and Samuel were soldiers in the late war. Politically, the family is Republican. He owns 160 acres of land, all of which he has made by his own industry.
