That some of our readers may know who our next Senator is to be we today give them a brief outline of his life. RN Allen was born in Putnam County, Indiana Nov 26th, 1846. His father, RN Allen, for whom he was named, was a farmer and stock raiser. He lived with his father on the farm until the fall of 1860 at which time they moved to Greencastle, ind, where he resided until he came to Kansas in March 1870. Graduated in the classical course for Indiana Asbury University in June 1869. Studied law under the law firm of Williamson & Dassy of Greencastle. Mr. Williamson at that time being the attorney general of Indiana. Was admitted to the practice of law by the circuit court of Putnam County in fall of 1870. Received the usual degree of AM from his Alma Mater in 1872. Was city clerk and treasurer of the New Chicago (now City of Chanute) from 1870 to 1874. Was county attorney of Neosho County 1879 and mayor of Chanute in 1885. Was married to Miss Anna Wickard of Okeana, Ohio July 16th 1878. – Thayer Headlight

Allen, RN – Senator Allen represents the 11th Senatorial District, composed of the counties of Neosho and Wilson. In the last Senate, each of these counties had a Senator. Senator Allen is of small stature, an attorney by profession, a native of Putnam County, Indiana just entered upon his 39th year. He graduated at the Law Department of Asbury University in 1869 (sic – Asbury College later DePauw University) in 1869. He was charge in the last canvass with having been a “bolter’ of republican candidates in 1875, 1877, 1878, 1879 and 1880 and he was made a candidate for Senator by the Prohibition wing of the Republican party. On the standing committees of the Senate he is second on Temperance; and is on the committees on Printing, Educational Institutions, Cities of the Third Class and Chairman of the Mileage and Per Diem committees. He came to Chanute in 1870 and is now related to the Southern Kansas Loan Company. - kbz
