     2)       THE FOLLOWING SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION REGARDING SOME OF THE INSTITUTIONS MENTIONED ABOVE HAS BEEN CONTRIBUTED BY SANDY RICKETTS, VOLUNTEER, AT THE INDIANA STATE ARCHIVES.

“The law only allowed children under a certain age to remain in a poor asylum for a certain amount of days.

Julia Work Training School and White's Institute were in northern IN. I think children were sent there from all over the State. The Archives has the records for Julia Work and what little information there is in the records is posted on http://www.indianadigitalarchives.org/. White's Institute is still in existence. The Archives doesn't have their records. It was started by the Quakers.  I visited White's Institute about 2 years ago to see what kind of records they kept on the children. They were a bit wary of my reasons for asking and somewhat reluctant to give much information. Someone researching an ancestor who was placed in White's Institute could always check and see if they have anything on that person.

This is the link for the Soldier's & Sailors' Children's Home   http://www.indianadigitalarchives.org/TitleInfo.aspx?TID=79

I'm not sure what the reference to Indiana Children's/Orphans Asylum refers to. I know the Marion Co. Children's Guardian Home wouldn't take children from out of Marion County. There was an Indianapolis Orphan Asylum, but I don't know if they took children from out of Marion County. Some children were boarded there by their parents until their circumstances improved and they could remove them. I once checked at Willard Library to see if they had any orphanage records and or records for the Vanderburgh County Children's Guardian Home. I was told no which is extremely sad/unfortunate. It's hard for me to fathom that they were all destroyed.

The Archives' has a volunteer indexing the names of children who were placed in the Blind School. They also have records for the Deaf School, IN Boys' School, and the IN Girls' School. The names of children at the Boys' & Girls' Schools through 1935 are on the indianadigitalarchives website.

There was a maternity home in Indy called the Door of Hope, however, there was probably one in Evansville who took in unwed pregnant girls/ladies with nowhere else to go. There were also places called baby farms....yes, baby farms.

This Foster Children 1892-1910 database lists some of the children placed through the IN Children's Home Society and the Board of State Charities. It's on the http://www.indianadigitalarchives.org/ website. This database is being updated to include the county from which the child was placed along with some corrections. Some of the files have lots of information.

Foster Children 1892-1910

The Foster Children Collection is comprised of files from the Children’s Home Society and the Board of State Charities. The files primarily include the inspection reports completed by either a State Agent or foster parent regarding the progress of a foster child. Some files include only one slip of paper while others are quite large and contain multiple reports and correspondence between agents, family members, foster parents, and occasionally the child. Often there will be separate files for each sibling. There are around 9500 files. This collection is particularly useful for families of children who were separated due to unfortunate circumstances. Patrons may request copies of the files for a fee. Please write to us at arc@icpr.in.gov
