Mrs. Mabel Barker Zimmerman, 78, widow of
Attorney and Ex-Mt. Vernon Mayor George F. Zimmerman and a former resident of
Mrs. Zimmerman and her daughter, Miss Alice
Zimmerman, teacher of arts and crafts in
The daughter on a leave of absence from her
teaching positions, has been an art and crafts student
in the University of Mexico at San Miguel. She and her mother have been
residing at Instructo de Allenda
Hotel in San Miguel. Mrs. Zimmerman's death occurred in the
American-British Hospital in Mexico City.
Mrs. ZIMMERMAN had been very ill for the last
two weeks of a perforated ulcer. Her brother, Claude F. Barker, Chicago,
recently joined his sister and niece in San Miguel.
The daughter, Alice, advised her cousins, Misses
Elsie and Loeraine Zimmerman, in Mt. Vernon Saturday
that following cremation she will bring the ashes of her mother to Mt. Vernon.
Mr. Zimmerman, a very able lawyer who practiced
for many years in Mt. Vernon and Evansville, a Republican leader and mayor of
Mt. Vernon for a term of four years, died in Evansville in 1951. Mr.
Zimmerman was an assistant U.S. district-attorney at Oklahoma City for several
years and following his return to Indiana served as referee in bankruptcy of
U.S. District Court for Southern Indiana.
Surviving Mrs. Zimmerman in addition to the
daughter and brother is a sister, Mrs. Gladys McFadden, Louisville, Ky. A
paternal aunt, Mrs. Florence Schiela resides in San
Francisco.
The deceased ws a member of a prominent Mt. Vernon family.
Her father was Daniel O. Barker, an attorney of
wise reputation who later was associated with his son, Roscoe U. Barker in the
legal profession here. Her mother was Alice B. Doss Barker.
