Chapman Utley, 54 of 430 Glover street, Portsmouth, Ohio, a widely known musician and a native of
Mt. Vernon, died last week in Portsmouth General Hospital. He suffered a heart attack and
died the following day.
Requiem High Mass was conducted Saturday morning at Holy Redeemer
Catholic Church preceding burial in Greenlawn
cemetery there.
Miss Bessie Barton, of 1919 B First Avenue, Evansville, a long time friend of the Utley family
and a former Mt. Vernon resident, attended the service.
The deceased was the son of Noble Utley, a Mt. Vernon barbershop owner and owner-operator of
the Pocket Hotel for many years, and Ethel Cartwright Utley, owner of a variety
store and millinery shop in Mt. Vernon. Both are deceased.
The late deceased attended grade and high school in Mt. Vernon and Cincinnati College of Music.
He had resided in Portsmouth for the last 30 years and was a
trumpeter and pianist with a number of name bands. He was pianist of Portsmouth lodge, No. 567, F. O. E.
Surviving are
the wife, nee Almena Griebel, whom he married in Newport, Ky in 1924, a son Chapman David Utley at
home, and a daughter, Mrs. Barbara Ann Costella, Lake White, Ohio.
