IDA MAY BLACKBURN SLYGH

 

Mrs. Ida May Blackburn Slygh, 63, a member of a prominent South Posey county family and the wife of Charles P. (Todd) Slygh a retired farmer, died very suddenly at 5 p.m. Monday (1 Nov 1954) at her home at 622 E. Water street.

 

Mrs. Slygh is the Repuglican candidate for Black township trustee in today's election.

 

Mr. and Mrs. Slygh moved to Mt. Vernon five years ago from the Bufkin community where they were born and lived until their coming to Mt. Vernon following Mr. Slygh's retirement.

 

The body is at the Short-Niehaus Funeral Home where friends are invited to call after 6 o'clock this evening.

 

The funeral service will be conducted at Mt. Pleasant General Baptist Church at Bufkin at 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.  Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant cemetery.  The officiating ministers will be Rev. S. D. Lemons, Fort Branch, Ind., former Mt. Pleasant pastor, and Rev. C. E. Terrell present Mt. Pleasant minister.  The body will be moved from the funeral home to the church at noon Wednesday.

 

Surviving in addition to the husband, are two daughters, Mrs. Hattie Swanagan, Evansville, and Mrs. Selma O. Wentzel, Black  township; a son, Merle Lee Slygh, Black township; a sister, Mrs. Henry B. Knight of near Mt. Vernon, and four brothers, Rev. Roy Blackburn, Hampton, Va.  Ralph Blackburn, Evansville, and Raymond and Kenneth Blackburn of near Mt. Verrnon.

 

The deceased was a beloved Christian woman whose Christian tents were expressed in her daily living.  She was a devout member of Mt. Pleasant General Baptist church.  It was while attending a service there that she suffered a heart attack several weeks ago, from which she never recovered although her condition was not viewed as critical.

 

She was a member of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, the Ladies Aid Society of Mt. Pleasant Church and the Bufkin Home Economics Club.

 

Her parents were William J Blackburn and Hattie Duckworth Blackburn, representatives of early Posey County families.
