JAMES HENRY (JIMMY) SEARS

1953

James Henry (Jimmy) Sears, six-year-old West Side boy, died at 5:10 a.m. Sunday (18 Apr 1953) at Baptist hospital where he had been since Thursday with acute lymphatic leukemia.

Jimmy had been ill with the disease for about a year, according to his mother, Mrs. Ellen Sears, of 3122 Edgewood drive.  It was diagnosed as acute in December, she said.

On February 20, four days after his sixth birthday, he was taken back to Baptist hospital for three blood transfusions.

Leukemia is a disease in which the white cells in the bloodstream "crowd out" the red cells and the blood-producing cells of the bones break down.

Thursday, he was given two more blood transfusions in an attempt to curb the disease’s progress, but Jimmy succumbed early Sunday.

His father, James Henry Sears, Sr., died May 29, 1951, of a heart disease.  He was manager of the Evansville grain co-operative at the time of his death.

Surviving besides his mother are three sisters, Mrs. Phyllis Smith of Washington, D. C. and Misses Susie and Karen Jane, both at home, and a grandmother, Mrs. Martha Van Way, of Evansville.

The body has been taken to the residence from the Alexander funeral home.  It will remain there until 9 a.m. Tuesday, when it will be taken to the home of Harold Stinson at Griffin.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday athe Griffin Christian church.  Rev. E. Lacy Satterfield will officiate.  Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant cemetery.
