LONG ILLNESS IS FATAL TO W.H. PETERS

Funeral will be at 2:30 Thursday for Bank Officer.

 

William H Peters, 59, an assistant secretary of People's Bank & Trust Co., and a capable, active employee of the financial institution for 30 years, died at 6:10 a.m. today at his home at 301 Pearl St;

 

IIllness of two years preceeded his death.  Although his condition worsened during the weekend his death came rather unexpectedly.

 

He had been inactive in the operation of the bank for the last two years because of illness, but had continued to hold the office of assistant secretary, a position he achieved by his long y ears of efficient and trusted employment.

 

Funeral Rites Thursday

The body is at the Short Funeral Home and will remain there through funeral services set for 2:30 p.m. Thursday in the Short chapel. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home after noon Wednesday.

 

Rev. August E. Binder, pastor of Trinity Evangelical and Reformed Church of which the deceased was a life-time member and former council president, will conduct the religious service in the chapel. Masonic and American Legion rites will be conducted at the grave in Bellefontaine cemetery.

 

The deceased, a past master of Beulah lodge, No 578, F. & A. M. was tis month re-elected to his 15th term as lodge treasurer. He also was a member of the Mt. Vernon chapter, No 73, R. A. M.; Mt. Vernon Council, No. 91, R. S. & M.; Sunbeam chapter, No. 1 Order of Eastern Star; Mr. Vernon Lodge, No. 49, Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Owen Dunn post No 5, American Legion. He was treasurer of both the Masonic chapter and council.

 

Surviving Relatives

Mr. Peters was twice married. His first wife was nee Gladys Robison, who died and his two surviving daughters are by that union. In 1939 he married Olga P. Seibert who survives. The two daughters are Mrs. Robert Greenawalt, Alexandria, Va. and Mrs. Robert M. Lawson, Richmond Va. both of whom are expected to arrive in Mt. Vernon tonight or Wednesday.

 

The deceased was a native of Evansville, but came to Mt. Vernon at the age of six years with his parents, John H. Peters and Dorothea Jurgenssmmeier Peters. He had resided at 301 Pearl street virtually all the time he had been a Mt. Vernon resident.

 

Following attendance of Mt. Vernon grade schools. Mr Peters was graduated from Lockyear's Business College in Evansville. For a number of years he was employed by the former D. & H. Rosenbaum drug firm and later Rosenbaum & Brother department store as bookkeeper.

 

Following World War I service in the U.S. Navy he entered the employment of the Peoples Bank & Trust company on Aug 1, 1920.

 

As a bank employee and as an officer of the financial institution since 1931 he had a record of conscientious, capable service that was generally recognized.

 

RITES THUSDAY - 1952

Peoples Bank & Trust. Co. of which Mr. Peters was an employee since 1920 and an assistant secretary since 1931, will close at 2:30 p.m. Thursday because of the funeral.

Funeral services were conducted this afternoon at the Short Funeral Home chap and at the grave in Bellefontaine cemetery for William H. Peters, 59, an assistant cashier of People's Bank & Trust Co., who died early Tuesday at his home at 301 Pearl Street.

 

Rev. August E. Binder, pastor of Trinity Evangelican and Reformed Church, of which the deceased was a member, officiated at the service in the chapel and Masonic and American Legion rites were conducted at the grave in Bellefontaine cemetery. Pallbearers were Wilfred Phillips, Robert V. Stinson, Albert H. Blubaum, Norman Walling, Edgar Alldredge and Dr. Frank R. Greer.
