WILLIAM NESBITT NEWMAN

MOUNT VERNON - William Nesbitt Newman, age 85, passed away at Mount Vernon Nursing and Rehabilitation on Tuesday, January 2, 2007.

 

Bill was born April 13, 1921, in Poseyville, Ind., the son of Wyatt and Neva (Nesbitt) Newman.

 

He was a 1939 graduate of Poseyville High School. He was a 1948 graduate of Evansville College, where he also earned his master's degree. He attended Indiana University and received his Principal's License. He taught social studies and coached high school basketball and baseball at Cynthiana and Poseyville High Schools. In the fall of 1955, he began working for the Metropolitan School District of Mount Vernon, where he taught driver's training and social studies and also was the Athletic Business Manager and Assistant Principal at the Mount Vernon Senior High School. He retired in 1983 as Principal at the Mount Vernon Junior High.

 

He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, James O. Newman and Richard M. Newman.

 

Bill was a World War II Veteran, serving in the 12th Armored Division, 23rd Tank Battalion, Company B. He was a Staff Sergeant and was given the Bronze Star for Bravery in Action. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

 

He was a member of he St. John's Episcopal Church, American Legion Post No. 5, Mt. Vernon M Club and the 12th Armored Hellcats (as they were known), past member of Kiwanis and Elks Club in Mount Vernon, Ind. He was a member of the Poseyville Masonic Lodge and Swords of Bunker Hill. He was a member of the Scottish Rite, National Education Association, Indiana State Teacher's Association and VFW Post No. 1114. He liked to travel, play golf, all sports and camaraderie. He loved people and saw good in others. He was a happy and joyful person.

 

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jean (Haywood) Newman of Mount Vernon, Ind.; a daughter, Cinda Newman Huber and her husband, Joe, of West Palm Beach, Florida; a son Bill H. Newman and his wife, Melanie Newman, of Mount Vernon, Ind.; three grandsons, Aaron Huber and his wife, Traci, of San Diego, California, Wyatt and Bryce Newman of Mount Vernon, Ind.; nieces, nephews and host of friends.

 

Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 6, 2007, at Schneider Funeral Home, 512 Main Street in Mount Vernon, with Rev. Allen Rutherford officiating and burial in Poseyville Cemetery with military rites.

 

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, January 5, 2007, at Schneider Funeral Home, where there will be a Masonic service at 7 p.m.

 

Memorial contributions can be made to the St. John's Episcopal Church.
