ROBERT ALLEN MARX

Jan 25 1957

A three year old Evansville boy of a Posey county family background tumbled to his death from a moving auto at Dead Man's Curve on State Road 62 eight miles east of Mt. Vernon at 3:10 p.m. Thursday (24 Jan 1957).

Robert Allen Marx, son of Mr. and Mrs. Shirley Marx 1801 Rollets Lane, Evansville was the fatality of the accident that created a traffic jam for more than an hour.  State Police Trooper Jack Eads, newly assigned to Posey county, was patrolling Road 62 and was at the accident scene minutes after it happened.  He was joined by Troopers David D. Tucker, James Schiff and Forrest V. Cooper.

The little boy was riding with his aunt, Mrs. Selma Bureger, 56, of 2101 West Delaware, Evansville.  They were the only occupants of the auto, a four door sedan, and were en route to Evansville after a visit with Mrs. Burger's sister, Mrs. Clem Schell, in Marrs township.

Mrs. Burger had locked the rear doors of the auto but in some manner the little boy unlocked and unlatched the left rear door.  As the auto swung around the curve the door came open and the child was hurled to the pavement of the highway.  His skull was crushed and he died instantly, according to Posey county Coroner Ferrel J. Meinschein, whose verdict was accidental death.

The body was moved from the accident scene to Alexander Funeral Home in Evansville.

The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Alexander chapel with burial following in Sunset Memorial Gardens at Evansville.  Rev. Charles Tyler, Evansville, will conduct the services.

Surviving in addition to the parents, are a sister, Linda, a brother, Larry, both at home; the maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hoeche, Evansville and paternal grandfather, Baker Marx, Mt. Vernon and Evansville.
