JASPER MARSHALL

April 7, 1956

Jasper Marshall, 74, a respected life-long resident of Mt. Vernon and vicinity and a retired Louisville & Nashville Railroad maintenance employee, died at 2 a.m. today at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Alfred B. Smith 214 Munchoff street.

A native of the Upton community, he had resided in Mt. Vernon at 525 W. Fourth street for man years.  He had been in failing health for several years and bedfast since last November.  He had moved to the home of his daughter about two months ago.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday.

The body was moved to the daughter's home today from Short-Niehaus Funeral Home and will be returned to Short-Niehaus chapel at 10 a.m. Monday.  Rev. Chester Laymon, pastor of General Baptist Church, will conduct the funeral service at 2 p.m. Monday in Short-Niehaus chapel.  Burial will be in Bellefontaine cemetery.

The deceased was a member of First Methodist Church and the Ben Hur fraternity.

Surviving in addition to the daughter, Mrs. Smith, are another daughter, Miss Wilma Marshall, Mt. Vernon, and two sisters, Mrs. Harry Cotner, Mt. Vernon, and Mrs Retta Hames, New Harmony.

Mr. Marshall's parents were William Marshall and Sarah Phelps Marshall, representatives of pioneer Posey county families.

The late deceased's wife, nee Nancy Welborn, was a member of another pioneer local family.  She died in 1946.

Failing health caused the L. & N. maintenance employee's retirement about 10 years ago after 35 years employment by the railroad.
