Dr. William A. “Al” Kelly, 69, of Mt. Vernon, IN, died Sunday, October
1, 2006 at the
VNA Hospice in Evansville.
Dr. Kelly retired July 1, 2004 after a long career with Bristol-Meyers
Squibb. At his retirement he was the Principal Veterinary Pathologist for the
Pharmaceutical Research Institute and had held several positions within the
Research division in Indiana as well as New York including Senior Investigator,
Department of Pathology and Toxicology, Senior Research Associate and Principal
Research Associate. Dr. Kelly also had a large animal practice early in his
career and was a graduate instructor in Veterinary Pathology at Purdue University. He was a Diplomat, of the American College of Veterinary Pathologist and the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology. He graduated Summa Cum
Laude from Auburn University formerly known as the Alabama Polytechnical Institute, with his D.V.M. degree in 1962 and
from Purdue University in 1971 with a Ph.D
in Veterinary Pathology. He was a longtime member of St. Mathews Catholic
Church where he was past president of the St. Matthew Men’s Club and was
a Lector and Eucharistic Minister. He was also a member of the Mt. Vernon Elks
Club and Secretary of the Southwest Indiana Brine Coalition (SWIBC).
He is survived by: his wife of 22 and a half years, Priscilla (Gempler) Kelly of Mt. Vernon; sons, Alex Kelly and his wife
Robyn Salstrom of New Jersey, MSGT Aaron Kelly
stationed with the US Air Force at Maxwell AFB, in Montgomery, Alabama and SPC
Adam Kelly stationed with the US Army 1st Armored Division at Camp Ramadi, Iraq; daughters, Dana McGuire and her husband Ken
of Great Falls, Montana, Amy Kelly and her husband Tony of Jackson, Wyoming and
Michelle Lowrance Nelson and her husband Nathan
Gossett of Mt. Vernon, IN; brothers, John and George Kelly both of Cullman,
Alabama; sisters, Mary Ann Tuggey of Cullman, Alabama
and Hedy Sue L’Hereault
of Hollister California; 11 grandchildren, Michael Nelson and Miesha Gossett, Megan and Dillon Kelly, Taylor, Ryan,
Mitchell, Abby, Zachary, Madison and Brady Alexander Kelly.
Funeral services
will be held 12:00 Noon, Wednesday, October 4, 2006 at St. Matthews Catholic
Church in Mt. Vernon, IN with burial in the church cemetery.
Friends may call
from 3:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Tuesday at the church with a memorial
service at 7:00 PM, and from 10 AM until service time on Wednesday at the
church. Memorial Contributions may be made to his church, VNA Hospice or St.
Vincent De Paul Society.
