WALTER GILBERT (GIB) GOODWIN

Funeral services for Walter Gilbert (Gib) Goodwin township farmer and a solid Posey county citizen whose reputation for industry and integrity were of the first order, will be conducted Tuesday afternoon.

Frequently a patient in Evansville hospitals during a year's illness of sclerosis of the liver, he died in St. Mary's Hospital in Evansville at 1:30 p.m. Saturday (9 Mar 1957).

The body is at Short-Niehaus Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.

Rev. J. Kenneth Forbes, minister of First Methodist church, of which the deceased's wife is an active member, will conduct the funeral service in Short-Niehaus Chapel at 2 p.m. Tuesday.  Burial will be in Bellefontaine cemetery.

Surviving are the wife, nee Mildred Blackburn, whose marriage to the late deceased took place in 1925; a sister, Mrs. Alfred Bitterman, Evansville, and a brother, William B. Goodwin, Mt. Vernon.

"Gib" Goodwin was born on a farm on the Springfield road in East Lynn township, a son of John B. Goodwin and Virginial Loyal Alldredge Goodwin representatives of pioneer South posey county families.  His paternal grandfather was Dr. E. J. Goodwin, who practiced medicine at Springfield and Bufkin in Posey county and prior to his Posey residence at Paoli, Ind. and Owensville, Ind.

The late deceased's formal education was terminated by his intense desire to engage in farming while he was attending Mt. Vernon High school following graduation from the eighth grade in Lynn township.

The same burning love for the soil distinguished his very successful career as a farmer.  Strong of physique, progressive in his acceptance of modern farming methods and willing to expend the required amount of work in transforming his plans into actuality, he became one of Posey county's very successful agriculturists.

He continued his residence in his native East Lynn township until last November when illness caused him to terminate his active farming and move temporarily to the Mt. Vernon home of a cousin, Mrs. Lena Thomson Holler, 710 Main street, during her absence from the city and pending the erection of a home for himself and wife.  Construction of the new home on East Tenth street has been in progress for several weeks.

The deceased had been a member of Mt. Vernon lodge of Elks for many years serving the lodge as a member of the important Home Committee on several occasions and finding relaxation and a fellowship which he thoroughly enjoyed in the club rooms of the fraternity.

Although he never aspired to public office, he was an ardent Democrat not only in principal but in part service.
