ALBERT C GERTH

Albert C. Gerth, 65, Mt. Vernon weather observer and fireman and chief of Mt. Vernon Fire Department for many years, died very unexpectedly at 3:10 P.M., today at St. Mary's Hospital in Evansville.

 

A heart condition extending over a period of several years was climaxed by Mr.  Gerth's removal to the hospital from his home at 321 E. Tenth street shortly after midnight this morning.

 

Failing health had forced his retirement from public service and the termination of 40 years employment as a molder by the former Keck-Gonnerman Co.

 

He continued to be an honorary fireman of the Mt. Vernon Fire Department.

 

The body is at Weisinger Funeral Home and will remain there until it is taken to St. Matthew's Catholic Church for Requiem High Mass at 9:15 a.m. Saturday.  Father James Brune, pastor of Holy Angels Catholic Church of New Harmony, will be the Mass celebrant.  Burial will be in St. Matthew's Church cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home chapel after 7 p.m. today.

 

Mr. Gerth's wife, nee Nellie Reed, died three years ago.

 

He is survived by four sons, Albert E., Cincinnati, twins, Wiliam and Willard, Mt. Vernon, and Charles, Indianapolis; two daughters, Mrs Edward Vollmer, R. r. 4 and Mrs. Marshall Paris, Sturgis, Ky;15 grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Leingang, Detroit and Mrs. James P. Smith R. R. Newburgh, In., and a half brother, William Gerth, Evansville.

 

The deceased was a member of Knights of St. John and Posey aerie, No. 1717 Fraternal Order of Eagles.  In his younger years he was a member of Mt. Vernon units of Indiana State Militia.

 

He was a life-long resident and useful citizen of the Mt. Vernon community, a son of William Gerth, a native of Germany and Margaret Martin Gerth, a native of Alsace- Lorraine.
