AUGUST GENTIL

August Gentil, 64, dean of Mt. Vernon restaurant owners and for 30 years a restaurant owner-operator at various locations in the local business district, died unexpectedly at 10 o'clock Sunday night in St. Mary's Hospital in Evansville.

 

He had been ill of a heart condition since Easter but made pies for Sunday customers of Gentil's Restaurant at 132 East Second street early in the day.  His condition worsened during the day and he entered the hospital by ambulance Sunday afternoon.

 

The deceased had owned restaurants at various locations on for 30 years and since 1953 had been at the 132 East Second street location.

 

Earlier in his career, he managed, the Smokewell Cigar co., confectionery and cigar store and then the Shadow Sweep Shop in what is now the Whipple building at Third and Main street.

 

Following employment by Wades Insurance Agency and E. B. Schenk Hardware Co., he returned to the restaurant field 30 years ago as a restaurant owner in the 100 block on West Second street.  Subsequently he owned restaurants at Main street locations and then returned to West Second street.

 

The body is at Weisinger Funeral Home where friends may call after 1 p.m. Tuesday.  Funeral arrangements were incomplete at noon today.  (Burial was in Bellefontaine Cemetery.)

 

The deceased was born west of Mt. Vernon.  His father was John Gentil and his mother was Emaline Curtis Gentil, a native of Posey county.

 

Survivors include the wife for 43 years, the former Martha E. Medcalf, who had been closely associated with her husband in his business; three son, John Harold and William Elvis, Mt. Vernon and Dale Adrian, Gary; five grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Rosemary Smith, Houston, Tex., and Mrs. Tillie Wall, Wichita, Kan..  Two old brothers are deceased.
